Bio: Bo Sheng is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of Massachusetts Boston. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from the College of William and Mary, and B.S. from Nanjing University. His research interests include mobile computing, big data, cloud computing, wireless networks, and security.
Abstract: This talk covers our recent work in two major research directions. The first direction targets on the emerging bid data processing platforms such as Hadoop and Spark. We have developed efficient and robust resource management and job scheduling schemes with the focus on data locality, node failures and heterogeneous environments. Our experimental evaluation shows significant improvements compare to the prior work. The second research direction in our group is to build efficient smartphone Ad-Hoc networks. We have investigated two new Ad-Hoc communication models for smartphones as well as a suite of new techniques to significantly improve the efficiency. Both models target on reducing the cost of route establishment and maintenance while one model is suitable for bulk data communication and the other model is specifically for short message dissemination. At the end, I will also introduce our ongoing and future work.
